President Trump’s proposal to buy Greenland makes the second time the U.S. has tried to buy the mineral-rich, 836,330-square-mile island.
AP quoted one anonymous Trump ally as saying that the president had discussed the purchase with aides but was not serious about it.
As CNN reported, President Harry Truman tried to buy Greenland from Denmark in 1946 for $100 million in gold, which would equal about $1.3 billion today.
Greenland has responded to Trump’s request by stressing that it is not on the market.
“We are open for business, but we’re not for sale,” said Ane Lone Bagger, the island’s foreign minister.
Truman’s proposal followed the administration’s flirting with the idea of swapping land in Alaska for strategic parts of the Arctic island.
