In line with COVID-19 restrictions, Sunnyvale Community Services held its first Drive-Thru Backpack Day July 27. Backpack distribution is set to continue Monday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Clients have been assigned a day to drive into Sunnyvale Community Services’ parking lot at 725 Kifer Road to pick up new backpacks, school supplies, nutritious food and $45 gift cards for new shoes for their students. These items are placed in vehicles’ trunks.

The nonprofit’s staff was expecting to provide supplies for 2,000 local students in need, a 25 percent increase over last year’s Backpack Day event.

Complementing Backpack Day activities, Sunnyvale Community Services will provide backpacks for local schools to give to transfer and homeless students who enroll after the school year begins.
