President Donald Trump called on the nation to condemn racism and white supremacy in a speech on Monday, vowing to take action to prevent further gun massacres following two mass shootings over the weekend, CNN reported.
In El Paso, Texas, 22 people died in a massacre at a Walmart on Saturday. Less than a day later, nine people died in a shooting in Dayton, Ohio, including the gunman’s sister.
While motives are still being investigated in both shootings, the killer in El Paso posted an anti-immigrant screed about 20 minutes before committing the act.
“This Anglo man came here to kill Hispanics. I’m outraged and you should be too,” El Paso County Sheriff Richard D. Wiles posted on Facebook following the shooting.
Trump’s speech Monday condemning the white supremacy that fueled the violence over the weekend followed days of criticism over the White House’s delayed response.
“Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform,” Trump wrote in a pair of tweets, adding, “We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!”
