New officers from the Oakland Police Department 183rd basic recruit academy took an oath Friday during their graduation ceremony at Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland. A total of 32 officers, including two Bay Area Rapid Transit and two Fremont police officers, received their badges. Acting police Chief Darren Allison was on hand for the ceremony after former police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick was fired Thursday by the Oakland Police Commission and Mayor Libby Schaaf.
Fremont Police officer Vincent Vuola delivered the valedictorian speech to the classmates, family and friends who attended the event. Oakland police officer Baltazar Martinez proudly dressed up his three children in police uniform customs. The event concluded with a video highlighting the officers’ training and a group photograph.
