ALAMEDA

On Feb. 9, the Alameda Theatre & Cineplex will roll out the red carpet for the live simulcast of the 92nd Academy Awards. The televised presentation in the historic auditorium will begin with Red Carpet Live at 4 p.m. and the awards show will start at 5.

Guests at this exclusive theater event are invited to a free champagne greeting on the theatre red carpet and a VIP ticket option for an in-theater delivery of a prix fixe meal during the show. A live movie trivia contest will offer prizes to those with Hollywood prowess as well as an online Oscar ballot contest to vote for guests’ favorite films. In the theater, a no-host bar will offer snacks, beer, wine and “Oscar Cocktails” throughout the evening.

Reserved admission is $35 or $45 with a meal (which must be chosen at the time of ticket purchase; a choice of five meals will be delivered in the theater at 5:30). Both options include a reserved seat, a welcome champagne toast, a red carpet photo opportunity, participation in the movie trivia game, an online Oscar ballot contest and, of course, viewing of the Academy Awards on the big screen. Red Carpet attire is encouraged. Reserved tickets are available at the theater’s box office, Cinema Grill or at alamedatheatres.com.

Alameda joins national stage as a clean energy leader

On Jan. 1, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) began providing 100% clean energy to all customers, placing Alameda in a select group of cities leading the nation in the transition to green power. AMP has reached this clean energy milestone decades ahead of California’s goal of 100% clean power by 2045. Alameda’s community-owned electric utility has moved past investor-owned PG&E, which is working toward the state’s requirement to provide 60% renewable power by 2030.

“Our little island has become a national trendsetter by greening its electricity mix ahead of major cities like Los Angeles, Boston and New York City,” AMP General Manager Nicolas Procos said. “We have much to be proud of this year as we come together to address climate change in our community and set an example for the nation.”

AMP’s clean power mix includes geothermal and hydroelectric sources, wind power and landfill gas. The clean energy supply goes a long way toward reaching the city of Alameda’s goal of reducing the community’s greenhouse gas emissions to 50% below 2005 levels by 2030. AMP is a department of the city of Alameda that has served local residents and businesses for 133 years and provides power to more than 34,000 customers at rates that average 17% below neighboring communities.

The fundraiser featured fun activities for everyone: a chili competition and tasting, silent auction items, a barbecue buffet dinner, a raffle and live auction, entertainment by the Dance 10  boy dancers and general dancing to end the evening. The cook-off’s Peoples’ Choice and Chefs’ Choice awards went to the chili prepared by the Alameda Fire Department.
