Ready for another hot weekend? We’ve got all sorts of suggestions for ways to eat, drink and play around the San Francisco Bay, from a mid-bay tiki fest to #SharkWeek-related antics, a museum’s urban block party and more.
1 SEE: Two pop star ex-lovebirds who might just ….
G-Eazy, the dashing Oakland vocalist who’s one of the biggest names in hip-hop, and megastar singer Halsey dated for about a year until breaking up recently (insert sad-face emoji here). But as fate would have it, Eazy and Halsey are both headed to the Bay Area this weekend and play the same venue just two days apart (insert multiple heart emojis here). Might love find a way to strike anew between these two crazy kids right here in the Bay Area? Probably not, but they’ll likely put on a couple of kick-butt shows. And they are just part of an astounding weekend of concerts in the Bay Area.
2 WATCH: Shark-tastic TV
We. too, want to live every week like it’s Shark Week. But this week really is, so if you’re curled up at home in the breeze of an enthusiastic air conditioner, flip on that TV. This weekend’s epic lineup includes “Naked and Afraid of Sharks” and other fine finned shows. And two Bay Area aquariums are getting in on the fun with themed offerings for young shark lovers.
3 EAT & DRINK: Treasure Island goes tiki
Well, aloha to you, too! TreasureFest. Treasure Island’s summery food fest-meets-flea market, is back this weekend with an all-Hawaiian, all-the-time theme. Sip a mai tai or two (they’re bogo from 10 to 11 a.m. for you morning drinkers!) as you browse the Hawaiian shirts, tiki kitsch and tropical treats at more than 400 vendor carts.
4 GET OUT: And take in some amazing festivals.
Do you like octopus-shaped kites roughly the size of Pluto? Do you get excited at the prospect of seeing the Pointer Sisters bring it on their East Bay home turf? Are you one of those people who isn’t happy unless your blood-garlic ratio hovers at 50 percent? This is your weekend: The Berkeley Kite Festival promises all kinds of eye-popping airborne fun; Oakland’s Art & Soul festival brings a mix of great music and yummy food, and the Gilroy Garlic Festival serves up all the culinary delights you might expect and some you probably didn’t. And there’s more; here’s a roundup of all sorts of great fests going on in the Bay Area.
5 PLAY: Museum night life
Nearly every major Bay Area museum offers a variation on the after-dark party scene, whether it’s an exhibit-themed cocktail party or a cerebral lecture. But the Oakland Museum of California does one of our faves, Friday Nights @ OMCA, a free, family-friendly urban block party with Off the Grid food trucks, music. free art workshops and more.
6 SEE: Tom Cruise prove he’s in better shape than you.
The latest “Mission: Impossible” movie hits theaters this weekend, and we won’t even bother speculating on the latest plot twists and skulduggery, cool location scenes or possible love interests because NONE OF THAT EVEN MATTERS. It’s all about star Tom Cruise and his latest insanely impressive stunts. And he delivers. Here’s our review, and a look back at some of our favorite scenes from the franchise.
7 EAT: 9 cheap (but awesome!) eats
Why should dining out be so dang expensive? Here are nine great eateries where the tasty fare — gourmet pizza, slurp-worthy ramen, organic shave ice and beer garden noshes — won’t deplete your wallet. (Psst, that beer garden is in Ghirardelli Square, so you get epic views with your pint.)
