Make no mistake, Bishop O’Dowd has played one of the toughest schedules around and remains one of the Bay Area’s top teams despite hitting some bumps along the road.
But the Dragons were still under .500 when they stepped onto the court Wednesday night at Piedmont.
It nearly stayed that way as the home team raced to a lead at halftime.
But led by freshman Jalen Lewis, O’Dowd kept battling and battling until it emerged with a 93-86 victory in double overtime.
The win improved the Dragons’ record to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the West Alameda County Conference’s Foothill League.
Piedmont fell to 13-2, 1-1.
“The 14-year-old, Jalen Lewis, played big!” O’Dowd coach Lou Richie said by text.
The 6-foot-8 star in the making had 26 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and four steals. Marsalis Roberson added 21 points and nine rebounds and Taj Phillips had 12 points, five assists and five steals.
The Dragons were without Cal-bound Monty Bowser, who could not play after getting ejected early in a victory Friday at San Leandro.
He will be back Friday at home against Mt. Eden.
Palo Alto heats up
Palo Alto remained undefeated in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division play, taking charge in the second half Wednesday to beat Mountain View 55-42. The score was 22-22 at halftime. Matthew Marzano finished with 21 points to lead Palo Alto (10-4, 3-0).
Mitty girls roll again
Since its last loss, to Mater Dei at the West Coast Jamboree in December, Archbishop Mitty has won five in a row and all have been by at least 20 points. The No. 1 team in the latest Bay Area Preps HQ Top 25 cruised again Wednesday, overpowering Valley Christian 70-25. It was 26-0 after one quarter and 34-9 at halftime. Ashley Hiraki led Mitty with 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sydney Bourland finished with 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Mitty ran its record to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League. No. 13 Valley fell to 10-5, 1-1.
Washington boys topple Logan
In a game played Tuesday, Washington-Fremont got 22 points from Austin Balentine, 13 from Joseph Mangonon and 10 from Jorren Edmonds to stun reigning Northern California Division I champion James Logan 64-63 in Union City. The victory was Washington’s first over its Mission Valley Athletic League rival since January 2013, a skid of 13 games. James Logan (8-7, 4-1) plays host to league-leader Moreau Catholic (9-6, 4-0) on Thursday. Washington (11-5, 3-1) will be at home to play Mission San Jose (5-9, 2-3) on Friday.
