OAKLAND — A 22-year-old Texas man who walked along the BART track way from the Lake Merritt Station for about a quarter-mile Sunday night was detained by BART police and placed on a psychiatric hold, officials said Monday.

The man was not physically injured and trains in both directions were delayed almost 40 minutes..

BART police were notified about 11:08 p.m. Sunday that the man had gotten onto the track way at the Lake Merritt Station and started walking southbound toward the Fruitvale Station.

BART spokeswoman Anna Duckworth said Monday police  traveled by train to his location about a quarter-mile down the tracks and tried to coax him into the train.

When he would not cooperate, third rail power was shut off, officers deboarded the train and took him into custody, Duckworth said. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Duckworth said trains in both directions were delayed, impacting the Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont lines.  The total delay was 38 minutes, she said.
