Red-card suspended San Jose Earthquakes’ Chris Wondolowski spent the entire game rooting for his team with the San Jose Ultras fan section. Between chanting and yelling he was high-fiving, thanking fans, recording videos, giving autographs, and hugging fans.
Leading scored Wondolowski and assists leader Cristian Espinoza were both red-card suspended. The Quakes took a one-goal lead into the second half until goals by Union’s Alejandro Bedoya and Kacper Przybylko in the 70th and 76th minutes.
Wondolowski’s celebration with fans over a goal early in the second half by Magnus Eriksson, which would have made the score 2-0, was short lived as it was overturned after video review.
The Quakes (13-14-5, 44 points) have lost their last four games and fall to 8th place in the Western Conference. They can still make the playoffs if they win their last two games at home against Seattle on Sunday and at Portland on the final day of the season, Oct. 6.
