It’s been 50 years since humanity’s first trip to the moon.
The nation stopped and watched on July 20, 1969, as Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their first steps on the moon’s surface while Michael Collins orbited 60 miles above above in the command module, where, after more than 21 hours on the moon’s surface, Armstrong and Aldrin docked for their return to earth
Major league baseball games paused briefly so their announcers could report the news that the astronauts had landed safely on the moon. An estimated 650 million people watched the television coverage hours later as Armstrong descended the stairs on the lunar module and took his first step on the moon.
The Trump administration has announced an ambitious plan to return to the moon by 2024.
