A 63-year-old female pedestrian was fatally struck by a driver on Oakland Road, near McKay Drive, on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019.

SAN JOSE – With the new year just days away, San Jose on Saturday recorded its 60th traffic fatality of 2019, matching the 25-year high tallied in 2015, authorities said.

The collision was reported at Oakland Road and McKay Drive about 5:45 p.m., said San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.

Garcia said a 63-year-old woman was crossing Oakland Road from east to west outside a designated crosswalk when she was hit by a man driving a 2008 Toyota Tundra southbound.

The victim was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, Garcia said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s identity once it has been confirmed and her next of kin is notified.

The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, said Garcia, adding that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the collision.

The woman’s death continues an alarming trend — she is the 29th pedestrian to be hit and killed by a vehicle in the city in 2019. More pedestrians have died on the streets of San Jose this year than in any other since at least the mid-1990s and perhaps even longer.
