A 120-square-mile area of the San Bernardino National Forest was added to the evacuation zone for the El Dorado Fire, burning since Saturday near Yucaipa.

The new order issued Wednesday includes the mountain communities of Angelus Oaks, Pinezanita and Seven Oaks, near Highway 38.  The fire jumped the highway between Mountain Home Village and Forest Falls; the residential areas of those communities were spared.

The evacuation area, shown in orange on the map above, is now within 2 miles of Big Bear Lake.

But the order was lifted Thursday at the southern edge of the fire, including for Cherry Valley, Hidden Meadows and most of Yucaipa, and reduced further on Friday.

The fire, started by a pyrotechnic device set off in dry grass, has burned 14,043 acres with 39% containment, said the Sept. 12 morning report from the San Bernardino unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It abuts the scar of last month’s Apple Fire (shown in yellow), which burned about 32,000 acres.
