The Berkeley High School baseball team went 3-0 last week and was within one game of West Alameda County Conference Foothill League-leader Bishop O’Dowd entering this week.
The Yellowjackets beat Foothill League foe Castro Valley on April 23 and also registered two other wins last week to start this week with a 15-7 overall record and 10-3 mark in the Foothill League.
Berkeley defeated Castro Valley 9-4, including a five-run sixth inning. Michael Dixon II had two doubles, walked, scored three runs and drove in one for the Yellowjackets. Teammate Theo Hardy added two hits, including a double, and three RBI in the victory.
After a forfeit win over San Lorenzo on April 24, Berkeley shut out Piedmont 15-0 two days later. Dixon came close to hitting for the cycle in an outstanding performance. He slammed a home run, double and single, driving in five runs and scoring twice. Ole Iversen and Hardy had two hits, and Zachary Tallerman drove in two runs for Berkeley.
Bishop O’Dowd was 1-2 at the St. Francis Elite 8 Tournament last week. After a 4-3 victory over Casa Grande, the Dragons fell 5-1 to Washington-Fremont and 4-0 to Paraclete-Lancaster. The Dragons entered this week with a 16-6 overall record and 11-2 mark in the Foothill League.
Alameda was 2-1 last week and improved its overall record to 12-8 overall. The Hornets’ batting was on point, as they beat Hayward 10-3 and Mt. Eden 9-1 before being edged by Windsor 8-7. Alameda enters this week with an 8-5 record in the Foothill League.
St. Mary’s defeated Encinal 12-5 on April 27 to enter the Tri-County Athletic League playoffs this week with a 16-7 overall record. The visiting Panthers scored four runs in the top of the second inning, seven runs in the seventh, and never trailed. Dominic Fadelli had a double and two RBI in the Panthers’ victory, and both Enzo Spremich and Kahlil Jefferson had two hits and an RBI in the win. The Panthers also beat Albany 6-1 and edged Oakland Tech 2-1 last week.
Encinal beat San Rafael 4-1 on April 23. Jon Atases and Cooper Vasquez combined for a one-hitter on the mound with six strikeouts. Jeriah Lewis and Atases both had two hits and scored one run apiece, and Justin Leung drove in two runs. Encinal also lost 7-3 to San Marin last week and entered this week with a 9-11 overall record and 5-3 mark in the WACC-Shoreline League.
Piedmont beat San Lorenzo 15-0 and San Leandro 10-7 in nine innings last week to enter this week with a 12-7 overall record. In the San Leandro game, Trent Settlemeier had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. Teammate Paul Woolcott was 3 for 5 with three RBI, and Kyle Spanier also had three hits for the Highlanders.
St. Joseph Notre Dame went 3-1 in the Fran Oneto Tournament last week. After a 9-2 opening-round loss to Atwater, the Pilots beat Ripon 11-0, Downey-Modesto 8-7 and Linvingston 13-5. In their final game against Livingston, Joseph Boyden had two doubles, drove in two runs and scored two for St. Joseph Notre Dame. Teammates AJ Ramsey, Michael Shih and Jackson McDermott all had two hits and an RBI, and Thomas Dumont also had two hits for the Pilots. St. Joseph entered this week with a 15-6 overall mark and a 7-0 record in the Bay Counties League East Division.
Skyline won a doubleheader against Castlemont on April 22 to improve to 9-1 in the Oakland Athletic League Premiere Division. It won the first game 12-1, then shut out Castlemont 8-0. The Titans’ Myles Davis was 3 for 5 with two runs scored in the first game, and 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a double in the second game.
Softball
Bishop O’Dowd entered this week tied for the WACC-Foothill League lead with Castro Valley after a 3-1 win over Berkeley on April 27. Elizabeth Avery threw a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and also slammed a home run in a 2 for 4, two RBI hitting performance for O’Dowd. Jackie Bowman also had a double for the victorious O’Dowd team. Bishop O’Dowd entered this week with an 8-1 Foothill League record and 11-4 overall mark. Berkeley beat Piedmont (8-1) and James Logan (5-3) last week and enters this week with a 10-4 overall record and 6-3 Foothill League mark.
El Cerrito split a doubleheader with Bethel on April 26, but still entered this week with a two-game cushion at the top of the TCAL Rock Division. In the 6-1 opening-game win over Bethel, the Gauchos’ Mia Souza pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Madison Heath had three hits and scored three runs, and Sara McIntosh drove in three runs. Alyssa Chin added two hits and a run scored in the El Cerrito win.
The Gauchos lost to Bethel 7-4 in the second game and enter this week with an 18-4 overall record and 13-2 mark in the Rock Division.
