Tony Bennett fans will have to wait longer to hear the iconic singer croon “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and other classics in the Bay Area.
The 93-year-old vocalist has canceled his show scheduled for Sept. 10 at the Fox Theater in Oakland due to an “unexpected illness,” according to a post from the venue.
Refunds are available at the point of purchase. There was no mention of the show being possibly rescheduled. The singer also canceled his concert scheduled for Sept. 7 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle.
These cancellations comes after Bennett was advised not to travel due to his illness, according to a statement from the singer’s representatives.
“Tony Bennett’s concert in Oakland will not be taking place on Tuesday, September 10 as the 19-time Grammy winner has contracted a summer virus and has been advised that he should not travel for the next week to allow for his recovery,” the statement reads. “On behalf of Tony Bennett we want to thank his fans for all of their support and apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.”
We recently interview Bennett, who was looking forward to coming back to the Bay Area, a place that he says has meant so much to him over the years.
“How fortunate I have been to have another “hometown” in my life as I have been performing in the Bay Area every season for decades and when I come here I feel so welcome whenever I go,” he said. The best is when a tourist, particularly from another country, sees me as I always get the impression that they think I am here all the time.
“I was told by my friends at the Fairmont (Hotel) that people come by the statue of me that they placed there for my 90th birthday and sing “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” to it which makes me smile.”
