Firefighters were able to contain a blaze at a three-story townhouse building still under construction in Concord in the early morning hours Friday, according to fire officials.

A Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crew was dispatched to the construction site on Willow Pass Road and Esperanza Drive — close to Concord City Hall — at 11:47 p.m. on Thursday, the district said on Twitter. The incident commander then requested additional units.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire before it spread throughout the unoccupied building, and no firefighters were injured during the operation, according to ConFire. The fire was concentrated in one of the five townhouses in the building, according to Tracie Dutter, a fire prevention captain with ConFire.

“There may be some smoke damage to the other four units, but the fire didn’t extend into those units,” Dutter said.

The fire is currently under investigation and a result is not expected for several days, Dutter said.

The fire was reminiscent of a 2018 blaze at a five-story apartment complex under construction at Concord Boulevard and Galindo Street. Investigators in that case determined the fire, which temporarily displaced 250 people in a nearby apartment complex and caused an estimated $55 million in damage, had been arson.

“The Galindo fire was a much larger apartment building, so thankfully this was a lot smaller,” Dutter said.
