Editorial cartoonists satirized the following top headlines this week:

Happy New Year!: Celebrations kicking off a new decade started in Asia and continued around the world.

Australia: Angry survivors of wildfire-ravaged areas confronted Prime Minister Scott Morrison after 381 homes were destroyed in more than 200 fires blazing across the country’s two most populous states.

Impeachment: Senate leaders continue to debate the specifics of an impeachment trial to take place later this year. While Republicans have resisted allowing Democrats the right to call witnesses in the trial, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has pointed to a new report directly implicating President Donald Trump in his administration’s decision to withhold millions in military aid to the Ukraine to bolster the case for allowing witnesses, the Washington Post reported.

Iraq: Iran-backed militias withdrew from the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad after two days of clashes with American security forces, Associated Press reported. The attack launched by hundreds of militiamen and their supporters served to protest recent U.S. airstrikes against an Iran-backed militia that killed 25 fighters.

North Korea: Kim Jong Un declared “the world will witness a new strategic weapon” as he warned that that there “will never” be denuclearization on the Korean peninsula if the U.S. “persists in its hostile policy,” which CNN reported to include sanctions imposed by the U.S. The new round of bluster followed a vague threat from the nation’s leader to deliver a Christmas gift to the U.S. if sanctions relief and other diplomatic concessions were not made soon.
