Iranian officials have said they would consider talks with the Trump administration over rising tensions in the Persian Gulf if the U.S. returns to the 2015 nuclear deal and ends its sanctions, Bloomberg reported.

That news followed New York Times reporting on American intelligence warnings that Iran had placed missiles on boats in the Gulf, in response to what the Islamic Republic calls an “unacceptable” escalation by the U.S. in the region. That escalation included a partial evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and Trump’s consideration of a military proposal to deploy up to 120,000 troops if Iran either attacks U.S. forces or ramps up its nuclear-weapons program.

While President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have since declared the U.S. does not want war with Iran, it’s still unclear whether the plan under consideration would involve American troops invading Iran. Prior to the discovery of Iranian missiles on small boats in the Gulf, Axios reported that Israel had warned the U.S. of an Iranian plot to attack U.S. interests in the region while BusinessInsider covered Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s indication that he would not abide by the 2015 nuclear deal’s terms since President Trump withdrew and slapped more sanctions against the nation.
