Some prefer small, eclectic boutiques, some opt for trade-only marts and one takes a down-to-earth, budget-conscious approach. Here are their recommendations.
McMullen
This Oakland boutique opened by fashion expert Sherri McMullen — her resume includes styling Michelle Obama — features an assortment of ceramics, baskets, home decor items and things that smell wonderful. After you decorate your home, you can style yourself with the line of clothing and accessories the store carries. This shop, besides being one of the hottest properties in Oakland, is a favorite of Angela Tafoya, editorial director at the millennial-centric Lonny.com.

General Store
This shop, another favorite of Lonny Magazine, carries a wide assortment of unique, free-form and stylish ceramic pieces, kitchen linens, wall hangings and books. You’ll also find clothing, jewelry and apothecary items.

This shop, a favorite of San Francisco designer Kristen Pena, has everything from Ria Leigh Silk Black terracotta pouring vessels to Ann Ladson forged bronze marrow spoons, wood and steel work tables and cast aluminum garden pots.

Super Simple
Wood and stone are the centerpieces for this shop, which carries an assortment of Bay Area style furniture, decor pieces and lamps that are essential Bay Area style items. Their mantra: form always follows function.

Esqueleto
This shop carries wall art, stoneware vases and jars, colorful textiles, prints and even a few geological oddities including the fossilized teeth of megalodon sharks.

Trade-only shops
If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind or specially designed pieces, you may need to work with an interior designer, who can access trade-only stores. San Jose designer Janet Marena takes her clients to Design Mart Silicon Valley, San Francisco Design Center, and Terra Amico.
For those on a budget, San Jose designer Katelyn Gilmour can always find affordable yet unique items at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, World Market, Marshall’s and Target.
