Lego builders, vendors and fanatics showed off their impressive creations Saturday during the Bricks By The Bay X Convention at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
Samuele Arcidiacono, of Hayward, a full-time software engineer and Lego hobbyist on the weekends, displayed his own creations — Lego replicas of a Giant Burgers stand and Tommy’s Doughnuts. “It took me over a year to build one of these,” Arcidiacono said.
Lawrie George, of Brooklyn, New York, said he designed a 19-hole minigolf display and built it with more than 8,000 Lego bricks in four months.
While it takes some longer to build their creations, festival visitors had a chance to create their own Lego bionicles in minutes — right on the spot — from Lego bulks for $5 each. Also, some took home loose Lego bricks for $8 to $10 dollars a pound sold by different vendors.
Winners in different festival categories are awarded Lego trophies made by volunteers, said convention President Eric Wilson. He built a trophy based on the Iron Throne from the “Game of Thrones” series. The winner of the Best in Castle, Fantasy and Historical category, will take that one home.
The West Coast convention is one of the largest in the nation and runs through Sunday from 10 to 4 p.m.
