Giant colorful letters reflecting a message of diversity and inclusivity now adorn the road near The Gardens at Lake Merritt after a community painting effort over the weekend.

The ambitious project was organized by the East Bay Queer Arts Center and spans a length of Bellevue Avenue near Children’s Fairyland and the Lake Merritt boating center. The words read: “All black trans queer nonbinary woman disabled imprisoned lives matter.” Although they can be seen from the ground, an aerial view is the only way to fully appreciate the scope of the project.

Large yellow “Black Lives Matter” letters can also be seen along 15th Street in downtown Oakland between Harrison Street and Broadway. In Berkeley, similar letters have been painted on Allston Street, and in San Francisco, on Fulton Street near City Hall. The idea originated earlier in this month in Washington, D.C., when two blocks of 16th Street, a central roadway leading straight to the White House, were painted.
