PIEDMONT

Interested families may apply for interdistrict transfers into the Piedmont Unified School District for the 2019-20 school year. There are openings at the kindergarten level for about 15 students. A lottery will be held if there are more applications than spaces. The Board of Education’s revised policy will permit children of grandparents who reside in Piedmont to apply for the interdistrict transfer.

Complete an interdistrict form from the district where the student resides and submit the form to that district for approval. If approved by the district of residence, submit the approved permit, along with required proofs to Sylvia Eggert, assistant to the PUSD Superintendent, and the district will process the submitted permits. If approved, applicants will be contacted by the PUSD by Aug. 1. For questions, call Eggert at 510-594-2614.

Students in Bank of America paid summer internships

Four East Bay students in paid summer internships through Bank of America’s Student Leaders program recently returned from a national leadership summit in Washington, D.C., where they took part in a community volunteer day and visited the offices of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Eric Swalwell.

The student leaders are placed in jobs with local nonprofits — Essence Burroughs (a Skyline High School senior), Elia Garay (a Leadership High School graduate) and Ricky Lam (an Oakland Technical High School rising senior) are working at Junior Achievement of Northern California, while Ryan Saechao (a Richmond High School senior) is working at YMCA of San Francisco.

The East Bay teens are learning how nonprofits serve community needs as they advance their own professional growth and civic involvement. They also receive financial education from Bank of America to help them better manage their $15-per-hour paycheck — learning basics like building a budget to creating a savings plan. Recently, job and recruiting site Glassdoor compiled a list of the nation’s “25 Highest Paying Internships,” with Bank of America ranked among the best. The program is part of the bank’s focus on youth employment.

Girl Scouts accepting donated dolls for lending program

Three Girl Scouts in Troop 31765 — Skye Yeh, Quinn Reilly and Zoe Zarling — are looking for donations of American Girl dolls and/or money to create a doll lending program at Richmond Public Library. The project would enable the girls to earn the Silver Award, the highest achievement for Girl Scouts in that age group. The project would benefit children who otherwise could not experience these collectible dolls. Specific dolls suggested to meet Richmond’s needs are Josephina, Addy and Molly. Those interested in helping should email zoe.zarling@gmail.com.
