OAKLAND — A driver who was shot while driving in the Caldecott Tunnel on Sunday night is expected to survive, the California Highway Patrol said.
The shooting happened just after 7:50 p.m. in the westbound direction of the tunnel, and the victims appeared to be targeted, the agency said. CHP officers, police and Oakland firefighters responded to the tunnel’s No. 4 bore on Highway 24.
“That’s the preliminary report,” CHP spokesman Officer Kris Borer said. “As more details emerge, we’ll be able to release more of what we know.”
When officers arrived, they found the driver, a man, who was conscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to the head inside a vehicle, the CHP said. He went to a hospital, and his injuries were not considered life-threatening, the agency said.
A passenger in the car also was grazed by a bullet, the CHP said. The agency initially reported that only the driver had been hit but said Monday morning that the passenger had been wounded.
The passenger did not go to the hospital.
Ages and residences of the two men have not been released. The injury to the driver was not considered life-threatening, the agency said.
Investigators’ efforts to gather evidence led to the bore’s closure until about 10:25 p.m.
Police said a suspect vehicle may be white in color, but released no other information and said the shooting appeared isolated.
Anyone with information should call the CHP at 707-917-4491.
