Coronavirus cases edged up Wednesday in the Bay Area as California overall topped 100,000 cases. As of  3 p.m. Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco had reported a total of 168 new cases and one new death.

The death was reported by Santa Clara County, where 140 people have now died after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

As of Tuesday evening, the 10-county region hit a new milestone by passing 13,000 cases.

Santa Clara County recorded 15 new cases Wednesday and one death. The county’s case total increased to 2,688 while the number of hospitalized patients dropped from 54 to 52.

Of the 2,688 COVID-19 cases in the county, 1,747 are from the city of San Jose where there is a rate of 170 cases per 100,000 residents. According to data provided by the county’s Public Health Department, 158 cases have been recorded in Sunnyvale, 127 in the city of Santa Clara, 85 in Milpitas and 77 in Palo Alto.

Alameda County surpassed 3,000 cases Wednesday, adding 63 new cases for a total case count of 3,049 — the most in the Bay Area. The county’s seven-day average for new cases peaked Tuesday, with 66 average daily cases recorded over the past week.

Ninety-three COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with the number of people in the ICU declining to 37 from 44 on Monday. But Alameda trails Santa Clara County in fatalities, with its death count remaining steady at 93 as compared to Santa Clara’s 140.

San Francisco County reported nine new cases Wednesday for a total of 2,408, the third-most in the Bay Area behind Alameda and Santa Clara counties. The county meanwhile reported no new deaths, with a total count of 40 since the pandemic began.

San Mateo County reported 59 new cases Wednesday for a total of 1,963. After noting six new deaths Tuesday over the weekend, the county’s death toll remained steady at 82 Wednesday. Fifty-seven COVID-19 patients are hospitalized with the illness, with 20 in the intensive-care unit — a slight increase since Tuesday, when the county had 52 people hospitalized and 16 in the ICU.

Contra Costa County reported 22 new cases Wednesday for a total of 1,375. The county’s death toll held steady at 37. Thirteen people are hospitalized with the virus, two fewer than Tuesday.
