BAY POINT — Two people survived the sinking of their boat hundreds of yards from shore on Monday, authorities said.

The boat sank in the water near McAvoy Road and the McAvoy Yacht Harbor around 1 p.m., according to spokeswoman Fire Prevention Capt. Tracie Dutter of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

One of them swam to the shore before a California Highway Patrol rescue helicopter arrived, that agency said. But the other person remained in water that the CHP described as “frigid.”

That person struggled to stay afloat, but a hoist rescue lowered down from the helicopter arrived on time. The rescue took less than 5 minutes, the CHP said.

Neither of the people on the boat were injured, and both were released at the scene.

Information on what caused the boat to sink was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

A helicopter, fire engine and medics responded to the incident.
