Although they may not get the attention of doctors and nurses, the staff who cleans common areas and equipment have become more important than ever during the pandemic.
These are the workers who mop the floors and wipe down the railings where visitors put their hands. Maintaining a sterile environment has become more important during the COVID-19 age. The task has become so essential that New York City for the first time in its history has shut down its subway so that it can be deep cleaned because of coronavirus concerns. That and Grand Central Station is likely all kinds of filthy.
Elsewhere, the Georgia National Guard has donned protective suits to clean the Provident Village assisted living and memory care home in Smyrna, Georgia. In San Diego, inmates trained in the sanitary profession have been enlisted to clean cell pods in an effort to halt the spread of coronavirus.
In Texas where the state is trying to reopen businesses, workers have been cleaning railings in malls and wiping down the pews at churches.
All that work cleaning, extends to children. In Kathmandu, Nepal, a little girl was sprayed with disinfectant as she went on her way to get free food.
