“Maybe your purpose on this planet isn’t on this planet,” says the voiceover in the first recruitment video released by the United States military’s first new branch in more than seven decades.
The new promotional clip previews members of the sixth branch of the armed forces launching into space as one of at least 14 kinds of soldier, specializing in fields such as cyber and space systems operations, cable and antenna systems, cyber surety and cyber transport, to name a few. The video also features scenes of U.S. Space Force (USSF) personnel and spaceflights, a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket cameo and an appearance by the Air Force’s robotic, reusable X-37B space plane, according to Space.com.
Established Dec. 20, 2019 within the Department of the Air Force, this is the public’s first hint of what USSF’s exact role will be in the armed forces. That same day, USSF’s headquarters were announced at Vandenberg Air Force Base, near Lompoc. Formal recruitment for Space Force began May 1 with an invitation to active-duty service members to apply to transfer.
The release announcing the application opening defines USSF as the military branch that “organizes, trains and equips forces to execute a variety of space missions, and to deter aggression in, from, and to space.”
Most recently, the USSF tracked Russia’s testing of an anti-missile satellite, which it said “exhibited characteristics of a space weapon” in an April 15 statement.
