More than 500,000 people around the world have contracted coronavirus since the global pandemic began in late 2019, according to data updated Thursday by Johns Hopkins University. Since the university first shared its real-time map charting cases on Jan. 22, more than 22,900 people have died.

Deaths from the pandemic in the United States topped 1,000 on Thursday as the nation worked to slow the spread of the virus, which had infected more than 75,000 people in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. California reported 3,000 cases and 67 deaths, which CNN described as a “doubling” of cases every three to four days, while New York, the domestic epicenter of the outbreak, confirmed 280 deaths.

Outside the U.S., Italy reported 6,153 new coronavirus infections and 80,539 total cases Thursday, the Associated Press reported. China, where the pandemic reportedly originated, announced that it would bar most foreigners from entering the country as its number of cases dwindled. Nearly a third of the world’s population, or at least 2.8 billion people, are living under coronavirus-related restrictions.

President Donald Trump previewed separate teleconference meetings he participated in with G-20 leaders and governors of U.S. states and territories as the focus of the daily coronavirus press briefing in a tweet Thursday. Continued media coverage of the briefings has stirred controversy and debate. Several news organizations and reporters in the past week have criticized the briefings as “dangerous” opportunities for Trump to spread disinformation.
