SAN JOSE — Firefighters were working to extinguish a fire at a vacant strip mall that sent heavy smoke into the sky just after the lunch hour Wednesday, according to the San Jose Fire Department.
The 3-alarm blaze was reported around 1:15 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Bascom Avenue, at the former Dick’s Center property, near the Bascom VTA light-rail station.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from at least one of the buildings and elevated their response to a second alarm about 10 minutes later, summoning a larger number of personnel to the site. A third alarm was called about an hour after that.
No injuries have been reported, SJFD spokesperson Erica Ray said. A cause was not immediately known for the fire.
The former Dick’s Center property was also the site of a three-alarm fire in March. The strip mall once housed a variety of local businesses including Eclectic Home Furnishings, Beverly Fabrics and Zorba the Greek restaurant. It is now being eyed by the city for a large residential and commercial development called Bascom Station.
