This weekend’s Silicon Valley Modern Home Tour will give guests a chance to peek behind the facades of six chic homes in Mountain View, Palo Alto and San Jose. Silicon Valley, of course, includes some of the most over-heated terrain in the Bay Area’s hot housing market.

This particular home tour includes a variety of new or recently renovated houses, from over-the-top estates to family homes like this remodeled Mountain View property that combines modern design sensibilities with budget consciousness. (See below for links to the other properties.)

Living in a small, mid-century modern house gave these homeowners a lot of small, cozy spaces to inhabit — but with a baby on the way, what they really wanted was more room.

How they accomplished it is one reason the house on Tamalpais Street in Mountain View is on the 2019 Silicon Valley Modern Home Tour, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 8. Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 on the day of the tour.

The couple who owns the house say they loved the indoor-outdoor style of their home but the segmented nature of the house didn’t afford them a lot of open space.

To get what they were looking for, the interior was opened up by removing a center wall and fireplace. Full windows and glass doors at the front and the back of the house visually extended the living area, creating the brightness and openness they sought.

The kitchen was shifted to one side and, for versatility and function, wheeled islands were brought in. White IKEA cabinets, colorful mosaic tiles and walnut accents brightened the area and blended with the custom walnut built-ins that served a dual function of providing hidden storage and furniture.

The mid-century bathroom was updated to a more modern look with wood accents, floating cabinets and decorative cement floor tiles.

To create a space for outdoor entertainment and to provide easy access between inside and out, wood decks were built around the house.
