OAKLAND — A 30-year-old man was killed in a multi-vehicle collision in East Oakland Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The man’s name has not been released yet.  Police said he was an Oakland resident.

Police said the man was driving a white Mercedes southbound on Monticello Avenue at a high rate of speed about 2:56 p.m. Thursday and initially collided with a Toyota Prius that was in front of him near the intersection of Trask Street. A 41-year-old Oakland woman driving the Toyota and her two children were not injured, police said.

The collision caused the Mercedes to go out of control and it hit some parked vehicles before crashing into a power pole in the 2300 block of Monticello near Fairfax Avenue, causing the vehicle to overturn,  authorities said.

The man was  pulled from the wreckage by people in the area but was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Investigators said it is not yet known if alcohol was involved in what happened.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
