Team Australia bested Japan on Sunday in the inaugural San Francisco Sail GP Championship.

After five rounds of fleet racing in San Francisco Bay, Australia and Japan competed for the second straight time in the championship match.  Australia defeated the Japanese team in Sydney back in February.

Teams from the United States, Australia, France, Great Britain, China, and Japan competed on San Francisco Bay during the two day racing event.

Several thousand fans gathered along the waterfront and filled a grandstand near the Marina Green to watch the F50 catamarans fly across the water on hydrofoils.  The 50-foot racing boats can reach speeds that exceed 50 knots.
