When last we checked in with our intrepid survivors, Keith was looking for a sign from God to tell him whether to leave the game or play on, and Reem was waiting for a sign that she hadn’t been left to starve on Extinction Island.
We quickly learn Keith took the torch and got on the boat, arriving on the island to be greeted by a happy Reem, who decides that although she was tempted to raise the sail and quit, she now has to stick around and be a mom to Keith.
Unfortunately, Reem is the sort of mom who tells you exactly how bad middle school is going to be. She tells Keith how hard the conditions are, how she hasn’t had anything to eat and how he shouldn’t expect to get a restful night’s sleep. Way to go, Ma.
The next morning they both receive maps and while Reem mostly complains about having to explore the island, Keith appears to take charge. They find the elusive set of stairs and at the top, find a bucket with rice. Reem is thrilled at first, until she decides there’s not much rice, and that they’re going to have to climb to the top of the hill every day. They should have called this Whiner’s Island.
In other events, Manu manages to win reward, claiming chickens over comfort items, but Wendy injures her ankle and has to be carried back to camp. Most of the episode is devoted to Wendy, who doesn’t want the others to kill the chickens. She tries to draw Rick into a plot to release the chickens, but he says that’s just crazy talk.
Wardog’s reaction to Wendy not wanting to kill the chickens is disproportionate to her “crime” of deciding to go vegetarian. Wendy doesn’t improve her standing when Manu ends up losing its third straight Immunity Challenge, and Vegan Wendy with a bum ankle is the logical sacrificial chicken.
But David wants to get rid of Returning Player Kelley and approaches Wendy, Rick and Chris with the plan. Chris is OK with getting rid of Kelley, but he wants to let Wardog know about the plan. He and Wardog are tight, he says, and not clueing him in could be seen as disloyal.
David warns him against it, telling him Wardog and Kelley are friends, but Chris doesn’t listen. As a result, Wardog tells Kelley that Chris is gunning for her, evaporating any plan in her mind to vote off Wendy. This puts Rick and David in a tough spot, but at least one of them ends up voting against Chris — no votes were shown this time around — sending him to Whiner’s Island with Keith and Bad Mom.
Next time: Wendy frees the chickens and the two tribes become three.
The highs and lows:
- Returning player Aubry has never won individual immunity or found a hidden immunity idol, until now. Correctly reading the signs that she and Joe, the other returning player, are on the outs, she goes on a mad search for a hidden idol and finds one.
- We applaud Wendy for trying to spare the chickens, even though she admits that she eats chicken and all sorts of animals back in the real world. Having to actually kill for your food often puts things in a different perspective. We also were in awe of her attempt to sabotage the chicken slaughter by stealing the flint, reasoning that if they can’t make fire, they can’t cook chicken. The plan apparently failed and Wendy risked her game, but it was entertaining to watch.
- When you’ve been a longtime fan of “Survivor” and have played it twice before, you’d think you would know that a big part of the game is voting people off. We’re looking at you, Kelley with the angry eyes. She didn’t even know if Chris had any support in his attempt to vote her off, but she immediately turned on him, like she did Wendy for writing her name down at Tribal Council the week before.
