LAFAYETTE — A medical helicopter crew rescued an elderly hiker who suffered an injury along the Acalanes Trail this past weekend, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said.

An ambulance took the person to a hospital after the helicopter crew found the hiker about a half-mile up from the trailhead, the agency said. The rescue happened after the STARR3 crew for the sheriff’s office heard a radio report about the injured hiker at 4:18 p.m. March 16.

After the helicopter arrived, the crew evaluated the victim’s age, condition and the terrain and concluded that a helicopter transport to a different area was necessary.

The helicopter lifted the hiker in a stretcher and carried the person to awaiting ambulances.

Video from the crews captured the rescue.
