House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Democratic members of Congress announcing that the House of Representatives will introduce and vote on a “War Powers Resolution to limit the President’s military actions regarding Iran” amid rising tension, CNN reported Monday.
“The Trump Administration’s provocative, escalatory and disproportionate military engagement continues to put service members, diplomats and citizens of America and our allies in danger,” Pelosi wrote in a statement on the letter. “This initiation of hostilities was taken without an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iran, without the consultation of the Congress and without the articulation of a clear and legitimate strategy to either the Congress or the public.”
Pelosi’s move followed the Trump administration’s approval of a drone strike that killed Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Quds Force, at Baghdad International Airport on Jan. 3.
CNN also reported Monday that Democratic leaders urged President Donald Trump to declassify the formal congressional notification sent before the strike that killed Soleimani.
