This week marks the 50th anniversary Apollo 11, the spaceflight mission that landed the first humans on the moon.

When the Apollo 11 astronauts returned to Earth after their historic moon landing, they brought back lunar samples for scientists to study. NASA on Tuesday released rare footage of the those scientists checking the samples for signs of life. The previously unreleased 16-mm film footage was remastered. In the footage, biologists and chemists can be seen studying the samples at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View. They worked with the samples in a clean room to rule out any possibility of corrupting them.

The Apollo 11 mission has Bay Area ties extending beyond Ames. One of the mechanical engineers for Apollo 11’s command module now living in the Stoneridge Creek senior living community in Pleasanton is just one example. In fact, four other Stoneridge Creek residents, who also worked behind the scenes to make the Apollo 11 mission possible, will join Mac Smith and showcase their photos and memorabilia, and share their memories of analyzing the lunar landing before launch and designing the parachute that safely slowed the return of the module back to earth.

The Stoneridge Creek event will be one of at least 23 you can check out around the Bay as the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing arrives this Saturday.
