We thought the Eiffel Tower was amazing, but it’s perfectly fine if you found it just meh.
It happens to everyone at least once in their travel lives. You save up and look forward to that big trip only to be underwhelmed by the (insert much-talked-up tourist attraction here). Or maybe the journey to the big famed spot — think Great Wall of China, Peru’s Macchu Pichu — took the joy out of the destination for you.
Luggage storage specialist Stasher decided to aggregate the tons of judgmental data on the subject, and rank the world’s most treasured and overrated attractions based on reviews from TripAdvisor, Google and Booking.com. They added data calculating how accessible and safe these attractions are to the mix. And then ranked them in a tourist attraction index.
According to Stasher, the most overrated tourist attraction in the world is — wait for it — Southern California’s own Hollywood Walk of Fame. What? You find 2,538 stars embedded in concrete on a highly-trafficked street swarming with street vendors and tour guides riveting? No judgment.
Rounding out the top five are Peru’s Machu Picchu, followed by Hong Kong’s Ocean Park, Hong Kong Disneyland and, in the No. 5 spot, South Korea’s Everland.
That leaves only one thing left to disclose: Stasher’s best tourist attractions in the world — the ones that almost everyone can agree are fabulous and memorable. Here are the top 10:
- Plaza de Espana, Seville, Spain
- Matterhorn, Valais, Switzerland
- Puy du Fou, Les Epesses, France
- Mosque of Cordoba, Cordoba, Spain
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE
- Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
- The Blue Lagoon, Iceland
- Acropolis, Athens, Greece
- Hungarian Parliament Building, Budapest, Hungary
- Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina, USA
