The Senate headed into the second day of arguments in President Donald Trump’s impeachment case as House Democrats continued arguing that he abused the power of his office and obstructed Congress for personal political gain — with no new information, the Associated Press reported.
Rep. Adam Schiff, who leads the prosecution, faces the challenge of trying to convince not just the “World’s Greatest Deliberative Body” but an American public divided over Trump as he seeks re-election later this year.
Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, acknowledged Thursday that restless senators forced to sit for hours through proceedings “really don’t want to be here.”
The Senate is now one-third of the way through 24 hours of opening arguments. Each side has up to three days to present its case. Once the House prosecutors finish, likely Friday, the president’s lawyers will launch their 24 hours.
It’s unclear how much time they will actually take, but Trump’s team promises not only to defend the president but to take apart the Democrats’ case. The Senate is expected to take only Sunday off and push into next week. Trump blasted the trial in a Thursday morning tweet, declaring it the “Most unfair & corrupt hearing in Congressional history!”
