OAKLEY — A driver who needed to be cut free by rescue personnel after the vehicle crashed into a light pole is expected to survive after being hospitalized with serious injuries, police said Tuesday.
Fire crews used hydraulic tools to get the driver out of the wreckage, and a medical helicopter went to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, Battalion Chief Jeff Burris of the East Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash but did not release details immediately. More information was expected from them later Tuesday,
According to Burris, the vehicle was traveling very fast when it slammed into the pole on Empire Avenue at Hemlock Drive around 10:38 p.m.
The driver’s door made the first impact, and the wreck pinned the driver between the driver’s door, the dashboard, center console and passenger seat, Burris said.
The car was totaled.
