When it comes to global tourist attractions, do popular and worthwhile always go hand in hand? Not according to the experts at Jetsetter, which recently released its list of tourist traps to avoid, along with recommendations for what to see instead.
In the words of Jetsetter’s Chelsea Bengier, who compiled the list: “While we won’t begrudge you if the Tour Eiffel is a top priority on your first Parisian rendezvous, if you’ve already been-there-done-that, we’ve got seven alternative sites that are always worth their salt.”
Those include New York City’s sprawling green Bryant Park (No. 4) over hectic Times Square, and Florence’s picturesque San Miniato al Monte (No. 3) instead of Piazzale Michelangelo, which can be spoiled by “people selling David miniatures and watered-down gelato.” Heading to Los Angeles? Skip Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame in favor of historic Chateau Marmont, where the odds of actually spotting a celebrity are much higher.
Here is Jetsetter’s list of the 7 Tourist Traps to Avoid (and What You Should See Instead):
- Paris: Sacré-Cœur, not the Eiffel Tower
- Miami: Mid-Beach, not South Beach
- Florence: San Miniato al Monte, not Piazzale Michelangelo
- New York City: Bryant Park, not Times Square
- Chicago: Nature Boardwalk, not Navy Pier
- London: Sky Garden, not the London Eye
- LA: Chateau Marmont, not Hollywood Boulevard
