Whether you’re a Paper Plane fan or a Bakesale Betty devotee, there’s no question that the Bay Area’s fried chicken sandwich scene is hot. But which one is the Perfect Sammie?

Last week, we asked readers to be judge, jury and eater — and help us choose the best of the Bay Area’s fried chicken sandwiches, bracket-style. We offered up 16 tasty, high-quality sandwiches, nominated by readers, from Johnson’s Saltbox in San Carlos to Wursthall in San Mateo and Fresh Tray Burger & Chicken in Concord.

Now the votes are in — and the Amazing 8 includes some primo poultry.

Berkeley’s Pinky & Red’s beat out Napa’s Norman Rose Tavern, while The Counter, which has locations in Walnut Creek and San Jose, reigned supreme over R&D Kitchen in Yountville. Starbird, in Sunnyvale and San Jose, bested Fat Maddie’s Barrelhouse & Bistro in Pleasant Hill.

So what happens next? That’s up to you, chicken fans. We’re down to eight yummy contenders. Cast your votes in the brackets below (use Firefox or Safari as your browser) and be sure to click the “done” button when you’re finished to submit your votes. Voting is open from now until noon on Thursday, Feb. 14. We’ll unveil the Fantastic Four on Friday morning.
