SAN LEANDRO — Firefighters were still on the scene Tuesday afternoon of a two-alarm blaze Monday night at a vacant building known as a homeless encampment site trying to determine a cause and making sure no one was inside, officials said.

No injuries were initially reported. Firefighters made a primary search of the building and a secondary search will be completed when the structure is deemed safe to enter, Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said Tuesday.

The fire started about 10:42 p.m. Monday at the building at 635 Marina Boulevard, that used to house the Dan Martinelli Poultry Co., and is now owned by a vehicle dealership, officials said.

It was not immediately known how long the building had been vacant, but its first floor and outside has become a known homeless encampment, the fire department said.

When firefighters first arrived on the scene, flames and heavy smoke were coming out of the second floor. Thirty-five firefighters had the fire contained within an hour.

Firefighters remained on the scene overnight to deal with flareups and secure the property. An additional search of the building Tuesday afternoon yielded no injured parties or bodies.

The cause of the fire and exactly where it started in the building are under investigation. A damage figure was not available.
