How will we see the world in 2020? Booking.com decided to find out.
Drawing on data from more than 22,000 global travelers and insights from more than 180 million verified guest reviews, the travel website made its predictions for the top travel trends in 2020.
Common theme? It will be “a year of travel exploration like never before, fueled by technology as well as a growing sense of responsibility and deeper connection with the people and places we visit,” a spokesman said.
The Rise of the “Second City” traveler, globetrotters who explore lesser-known destinations — Marseille instead of Paris, for example — in a bid to reduce over-tourism, topped the list. Similarly, “Slo-Mo as the new #FOMO” came in No. 3. Simply put, travelers would rather take it slow and enjoy the journey than rush to see it all. That includes slower modes of transport, like bikes and trains.
Pet-centric travel (No. 5) will also grow, as will travel ruled by culinary and dining ambitions (No. 7) and travel during retirement (No. 8). Here are Booking.com’s top eight travel trends for 2020.
- The rise of the “second city” traveler
- Tech-spect the unexpected
- Slo-Mo is the new #FOMO
- Discovering the all-amusive — all attractions in one place — escape
- Pets in the priority lane
- Making great memories with grand (parent) getaways
- Race to the (dinner) reservation
- Fast-track to retirement travel
