Dogs and owners in a variety of Halloween costumes gathered Saturday in Oakland’s Jack London Square for the annual DogFest/Boo! Bark, Brews + Bites organized by Canine Companions for Independence. The family and dog-friendly festival benefits the agency, which places trained assistance dogs with adults, children and veterans with disabilities, free of charge.

A highlight of the event was the costume contest featuring about 40 participants and their dogs competing in three categories; spookiest, funniest and best duo or group. The best judges were the audience as they applauded for the best costume in each category.

The festival also featured assistance dog demonstrations, vendor booths, tricks and treats, San Jose Shark’s mascot Sharkie and puppy Finn, raffles, live music, food, beer and wine, people and pooch crafts, and pet photos, among other activities.
