A 72-year-old woman is dead and a young girl sent to the local hospital, after a two-alarm fire Monday morning on Greenmoor Drive.

The San Jose Fire Department received reports of the fire around 7:28 a.m. and when they arrived, they found the 72-year-old woman dead, according to Captain Peter Caponio. A young girl, between 8 to 12 years old, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A 22-year-old man, the woman’s grandson, escaped by jumping out the window of a first-story bedroom and had minor injuries.

Earlier, ABC7 mistakenly reported a young girl was killed in the fire.

“I heard a pop and thought ‘was that a gunshot,’ ” said neighbor Georgia Stalions. Clad in her pajamas, she went outside and saw a massive fire, with smoke billowing 50 feet in the air.

“It scared the heck out of me,” Stalions said.

Allie Bunnell,  who lives close to the fire, was awakened by neighbors knocking on her door.

“They just said there’s a fire, you have to get out,” Bunnell said. Soon after, police officers also told her to evacuate, so Bunnell grabbed her dogs and left her home.

The fire was under control as of 8:23 a.m., said Caponio. The blaze seemed to start in the rear of the building and the house has significant damage, including a lot of smoke damage.

It’s currently unknown what caused the fire. Firefighters do not suspect arson, but are required to conduct an arson investigation because someone died in the fire, said Caponio.
