It’s not a question of which dog is better. It’s more a matter of which one captures that special place in our hearts, combining intelligence, loyalty, just right amount of fierceness, and … oh, who are we kidding? It’s all about the cute.

We’re presenting 32 breeds and mixed breeds, based mostly on rankings by the American Kennel Club and the website, Dogtime, and asking you to do the near impossible: Select the top dog. We know they’re all favorites; we just want you to pick your most favorite.

Polling starts today with the round of 32, which will send 16 dogs to the Sweet 16, while the 16 others will don cones of shame and head off for some extra treats and belly rubs. Voting on the first round ends Thursday at noon, and we’ll launch the next battle at 4 p.m. the same afternoon.

So get ready, get set, and fetch. We mean vote.
