Arnold Schwarzenegger would have pulled it off if it weren’t for his accent.

No, he wouldn’t have. But that was the point, wasn’t it?

In a tongue-in-cheek video for nonprofit electric car advocacy group Veloz, the actor and former California Governator dons a “disguise” consisting of a fake mustache, ponytail under a cap and a Hawaiian shirt that makes Schwarzenegger look like, well, Schwarzenegger wearing a fake mustache, ponytail under a cap and a Hawaiian shirt.

Arnold portrays environmentally unfriendly used-car salesman Howard Kleiner, who pushes gas-guzzling vehicles to unsuspecting electric car shoppers. Except two of the first shoppers featured in the video immediately recognized him and literally laughed out loud as Schwarzenegger approached them.

No one would accuse Arnold of being an Oscar-worthy actor, but he always had comedic chops, which are in full display in the three-plus-minute video.

He tries to convince the aforementioned couple that a Hummer would be the way to go. Standing behind the polluting vehicle, he tells the customers, “Ahhh, I love the smell of exhaust. Smell this.”

Another couple wondered about getting tax credit for purchasing an electric car.

“You want a tax credit or do you want to have street credit?” Kleiner/Schwarzenegger asked.

“You know that the planet is too crowded right now, right?” he added. “Gasoline cars create pollution and it curbs population. It brings it down. That is the idea.”

And of course — no spoiler alert needed here — he trotted his famous “I’ll be back” line.

Schwarzenegger also showed his versatility by portraying a second character in the video, which was titled “Kicking Gas.”
