It’s all about the journey, not the destination, right? The folks at KAYAK, the travel site, concur, and have selected their favorite stopover cities, from Toronto to Singapore, some based on airline layover deals too tempting to pass up.
Lisbon, Portugal: A natural stopover en route to Spain, Lisbon has it all, from wine and romantic ports to canned fish and romantic cobble-stoned streets.
Toronto, Canada: The capital of Ontario offers something for everyone, including the Royal Toronto Museum, 400-acre High Park and hip Distillery District. A perfect stop en route to Asia or Europe.
Reykjavik, Iceland: Geothermal spas, Nordic cuisine and Viking history? No wonder Iceland’s largest city continues to top destination lists.
Amsterdam, Netherlands: Seriously? As if you need a reason. OK, it’s KattenKabinet, a museum dedicated to cats. KLM offers two free stopovers when flying from a select list of origin countries.
San Francisco, CA: If you’re lucky enough to live near San Francisco, it’s a world-class staycation. If not, put it at the top of your stopover list en route to Portland or Seattle.
Singapore: Thanks to “Crazy Rich Asians,” the world knows the blockbuster movie skylines and cuisine here. Singapore Airlines offers great stopover deals en route to Australia or Indonesia.
Helsinki, Finland: Picture-perfect architecture, seaside saunas and the central Lutheran Cathedral? Sounds like a perfect stopover, especially via FinnAir, which offers free layovers in Helsinki.
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Take a self-guided walking tour of this decadent city, snapping many selfies at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center, a 20-minute taxi from the airport.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The world’s tallest building, an aquarium that lets you swim with sharks and the planet’s largest mall. Why wouldn’t you stop?
Hong Kong: The Temple Street Night Market and some of the world’s best street food await you in Southeastern China. All of Hong Kong is easily accessible by train, making it a perfect layover.
