If you’re a fan of modern style homes, then this weekend’s Silicon Valley Modern Home Tour is definitely for you.

The tour of homes in Mountain View, Palo Alto and San Jose features the best in modern architecture in six new or recently renovated houses that range from family homes to over-the-top estates. (See below for links to the other properties.) Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 on the day of the tour, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 8.

The designers of a 3,000-square-foot Palo Alto house on South Court envision their creation as a ship, one that has sailed through some small, but rough waters.

The house, with its curved lines echoing that of a sailing ship, rests on a small lot that the builders considered “substandard” in size, and it’s flanked by a creek with tall concrete banks.

While some would have seen that as a nonstarter, the architect took it as a challenge, eschewing the conventional to create a design that optimized the use of space with vertical interlocking shapes that evoke music; not a sea shanty, but an aria. Notice the entry door design, too, which looks like an abstract musical instrument.
