Thinking about fall getaways? Beach season is hardly over. California natives know this, which is why we often wait until September or October to jet down to San Diego for a beach fix. The weather is milder, the crowds are gone and hotel rates are more reasonable.
The less-frequented stretches of San Diego’s North County coastline are particularly quiet and gorgeous, especially in and around Carlsbad and Encinitas. A few miles north, in Del Mar, you can enjoy plenty of pristine beaches, and so can your pup: The half-mile of sand known as Del Mar North Beach is dog-friendly. And up near Point Loma, get swept up in the views of crashing waves and majestic Sunset Cliffs.
When you go, bring this list along as you explore our top eight beaches along the San Diego coastline, from Oceanside to the U.S.-Mexico border:
- Moonlight Beach, Encinitas
- Black’s Beach, La Jolla
- Border Field State Beach, San Diego
- Sunset Cliffs, Point Loma
- South Carlsbad State Beach, Carlsbad
- Del Mar City Beach, Del Mar
- Windansea Beach, La Jolla
- Tides Beach, Solana Beach
