WASHINGTON (AP) — A former campaign manager for Donald Trump is doubling down on his dismissive comment regarding a girl with Down syndrome who was reportedly separated from her mother at the border.

Corey Lewandowski had appeared Tuesday on Fox News Channel along with  Democratic strategist Zac Petkanas to discuss the separation of migrant children from parents charged with entering the country illegally.

When Petkanas mentioned a story about a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome who was taken from her mother, Lewandowski responded with a “sad trombone” noise: “Womp-womp.”

On Wednesday he tweeted that he had not mocked the child but rather “mocked a liberal who attempted to politicize children.”

Lewandowski went on to say: “The MSM doesn’t want to talk about these policies were started under Obama.” Despite President Trump’s repetition of that allegation, the zero-tolerance policy that has resulted in separating children began in early May of this year.
